The Michael Leonhart Orchestra is a powerhouse and eclectic live ensemble in the spirit of Frank Zappa, Charles Mingus and Gil Evans. The orchestra features  a magical blend of unique improvisers and world class ensemble players from bands such as Sharon Jones & the Dap-kings, the Mingus Big Band, Maria Schneider’s Orchestra, the Tonight Show Band (Roots) and other musicians from the NY/Brooklyn jazz/soul/studio scene.
 
At age 17, Michael was honored as the youngest Grammy recipient in history, cited as the most outstanding musician in a U.S. high school. That same year ABC World News named him "Person of the Week." As a solo artist Michael has released seven albums and is sought throughout the music and entertainment world as a trumpeter, producer, songwriter, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and film composer. Most recently, Michael performed on Mark Ronson’s smash hit “Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars. He composed music for and directed Meryl Streep for the recent Decca soundtrack album “Songs of Lahore,” and was a producer on “Many A New Day: Karrin Allyson Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein,” which was nominated for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year at the 2016 Grammys.
 
Nels Cline’s “Lovers” (arranged & conducted by Michael Leonhart) was released on the legendary Blue Note records in August 2016 to rave reviews.
 
Michael is currently finishing up the debut album by the MLO (Michael Leonhart Orchestra) to be released in 2017.
