Per,

In my humble opinion, you will be better off being in Manhattan than having to deal with the extra time and hassle of getting back and forth from New Jersey by train. I would look for the best deal you can find and compare the prices to what you find in New Jersey, but then factor in the extra time and inconvenience of having to rely on the New Jersey transit train.

That said, I know hotels in Manhattan can be very expensive; this one might have a good price: http://www.thehotelnewton.com/. Tell them you are in town to attend an event at Columbia University and they may give you a discount. Mike

Looks like I'll get the time off from work to make good on my promise
to myself  a few years back; see Steely Dan live in the USA!

My plan is to make it to the Rarities show and catch a few more during
the week.
Have been to New York once. That was back in 1990 and the heatwave
during part of the week I stayed had me glad we'd picked a hotel in
the middle of Manhattan. The closer we were to things we wanted to
see/do the better.
So this time around I planned to repeat the choice of hotel and find
one somewhere close to the Beacon. That is until a friend of mine
wondered why I wanted a Manhattan hotel and pay twice, thrice the
price of a room compared to say New Jersey.

"Just take the train to Manhattan. 30 minutes and you're there", was
his suggestion.

Since I'm not made of money and rather would spend some extra cash
buying you all a round or two at whatever Danfest might happen during
the Beacon week, his suggestion made some sense. ButI come here for
some sound advice from more experenced New York visitors/inhabitants
when it comes to picking a place to stay and traveling to/from
Manhattan.

Meanwhile I'm off to scout the Internet for cheap flights and planning
that week in September.
