Montreal 11/28 was the last night on the 2009 Rent Party tour. A
planned second night for 11/29 was cancelled without reason given but
I suspect that there are not enough people in this market to support
2 nights of Steely Dan given the expensive ticket prices and the fact
they played 2 nights here only 17 months ago.
This was my 3rd Steely Dan show this summer. I saw them in New York
at the Beacon for 2 nights in the summer and managed to hook up with
the Danfan pre-show party at Amsterdam's where I met with Mr. Jim
McKay in person and then the after-show party at the Bitter End on
the following night where I met up with Mr. Pete Fogel. All this to
say that the best place to experience the Steely Dan experience is
New York City plain and simple. The Beacon is a vintage landmark
theatre and the sound quality is excellent.
The Montreal crowd was receptive and warm, but this was a more
cerebral crowd - no dancing in the aisles, no village drunks, etc.
The crowd was into the music but not to the extent that you would see
at a Beacon show.
Flawless show as always and all in all Donald was in fine form on
vocals . Walter's guitar playing was also in top form. Carlock and
Herrington were perfect. In fact I would go so far as to say that
Steely Dan as we know it today could not exist without Jon Herrington
since he has mastered so many of the songs and difficult solo pieces
that the band's existence depends on his talents as much as the
originators D & W.
Set list follows with the nice surprise of the night being
Bodhisvattva just after the Aja album was completed. Donald: "That
was Aja. Now we're going to play some music that spans our
illustrious career".
